Our Northern Michigan Home: Cabin Bedroom Design
When we were designing our house in Northern Michigan we really wanted to lean into the natural elements of the area. Wood, stone, textures and plaids, and a classic up north cabin vibe. One thing that instantly comes to mind is a classic “Americana” bedroom design. Something that reminds you of up north – a Ralph Lauren inspired cabin bedroom. There’s something so nostalgic and cozy about it. We knew that one of the two spare bedrooms would be a kids room with twin beds, and the twin bedroom design was perfect for this look! We still have a ways to go, but this is our start on our home-turned-AirBnb.
Now that we are renting this home out, I like to refer to it as the “cabin”. It is new construction, but we really want to add character to it. We plan on so many more projects at the house over time, so we are calling this “phase one” of the cabin. Phase two will hopefully involve more interior details – stone work on the fireplace, wood beams, changing out some curtains and blinds. Phase three will eventually be more landscaping, exterior stone work, getting the grass nice and green (my husband is especially excited about this one), and working on the patio area. But, these things take time&money, so we are in no rush to complete them. We are just excited to have this home to work on, invest in, and share with family for years to come!
Details about the design
If budget wasn’t a thought, there was so much that could be done with this space. But knowing that this home would eventually be rented, we wanted to be economical with our design choices. This wallpaper is super affordable, and I can’t believe it was from Home Depot! Sandberg wallpaper and Boråstapeter also have some really gorgeous prints.
The boucle bench was a piece that we had in a different bedroom for the longest time. It didn’t feel right and took up too much space, so I knew I wanted to use it for our “ski lodge” style bedroom. I love the texture it added!
The rug took me a long time to find. I kept going back to a plaid rug, but I wasn’t quite sold on it, plaid felt too predictable! I also wasn’t a fan of any of the more modern style rugs, it didn’t give that Ralph Lauren feel. This rug ended up being perfect! The combination of white, gray, and a little cream makes it blend nicely with the various light tones. The narrower lines on the rug don’t take away from the lines on the wallpaper, and the different blues bring the room together.
The maritime flags and snowshoes were both Facebook Marketplace finds, and the frames were from Target! You can shop the rest of the bedroom below!
